Introduction

I am going to share with you my techniques for effectively massaging three main areas: the shoulder blades, the trapezius and the neck. Mastering these three areas is essential for a good back massage.

Ideally, I would have preferred to teach you this in an in-person massage training, and I recommend that you practise regularly and communicate well with the person receiving the massage to make sure there is no discomfort. Especially for the neck: it is a very sensitive area.

My Approach to Upper Back Anatomy

Over my years of practice, I have developed an in-depth understanding of the structure of the upper back. In my in-person massage trainings, I always explain a little anatomy during the practice.

The Shoulder Blades

  • I see them as essential pivots for arm mobility, too often ignored by massage therapists when dealing with shoulder problems.

  • There are very important pressure points that can bring relief to the back and the shoulder, and in general with shoulder problems you will also find restrictions and tension between the shoulder blade and the thoracic vertebrae.

  • The Trapezius

  • It is a very large and important muscle that covers a big part of the upper back.

  • Do not forget that one of the attachments of the trapezius is on the occiput, which is why head massages relax the upper back and the neck.

  • The Neck

  • I always treat it with particular care, because it is a delicate area: you must not put too much pressure on it during the massage.

  • It is particularly sensitive to everyday tension, and even though I show a few techniques in this training, the ideal is really to discover the techniques with me in person during the in-person trainings.

Why I Consider the Upper Back Crucial

In my practice, I have found that the upper back is essential for several reasons:

  • It supports the head and neck, greatly influencing our overall posture.

  • It is involved in most of the arm and shoulder movements we make every day.

  • It is an area I often see affected by stress and poor working postures in my clients.

I can assure you that a well-performed massage of this area can considerably improve posture and relieve built-up tension.

My Precautions and Adjustments

  • I will teach you how I adapt the pressure to the sensitivity of each area.

  • I will share my particular precautions for the cervical region (neck).

  • You will learn to recognise the sensitive points around the shoulder blades, as I do in my practice.
